Folk Tales & Fables of Europe by Barbara Hayes, with illustrations by Robert Ingpen
In this beautifully illustrated book is a collection of old stories from all over Europe. A map at the beginning provides a key to the regions of origin. Nations represented are England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, and Greece. Several tales are familiar, such as The Sword in the Stone, Beowulf, Perseus, and The Legend of the Lorelei. But the lesser-known ones are the most fascinating, including “The Grey Palfrey” (France), “The Pedlar of Swaffham” and “The Lambton Worm” (both from England) and a couple of not-so-famous Aesop fables. I recommend this book for its lovely graphics and the overview of European folklore.
