150 Years of O. Henry

O. Henry’s birthday inspired us to share some of our favorite short stories:

I have always enjoyed The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry and it has been made over in many variations with movies and TV specials.  One of my favorite variations to this classic story was done in a children’s version Emmet Otter’s Jug band Christmas by Russell Hoban.  It is out of print now but the DVD version narrated by Kermit the Frog is truly a nice classic story for the holidays.

I was going to recommend “The Princess Who Kicked Butt,” but I see we no longer own it (although you can place a hold on the collection that includes it).  My favorite collection of fantasy stories is Dragons and Dreams.  It was a book I read as a kid and remembered into adulthood.  I asked for a copy of my own, and when I read it again I saw several authors who were now familiar that I had first encountered in that book.  Short stories can be a great way to try out an author you have never read before.
