Join the Fountaindale Public Library for our fifth annual celebration of El día de los niños/El día de los libros, commonly known as Día! Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. On April 25, 2015 we will have a full day of events highlighting some of the different cultures in our community.
To start the day we will be hosting Stories and Signs: ASL Storytime. Learn basic American Sign Language signs such as the alphabet, numbers, and colors, followed by stories and activities presented by Jill Boice from the Valley View School District. Designed for a preschool storytime audience (child plus adult) but all ages are welcome! Try your hand at signing! The event will be from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. in our Storytime Room.
Musica y Movimiento Storytime will have music in Spanish and English, instruments and props for the children to dance and play with, interactive songs to sing along and move to, and short story time. This program will be from 11:00 – 11:45 a.m. in Meeting Room A.
Celebrate the Arabic language through stories, dance, music and more with our Discover Arabic program. This program will be from 1:00 – 1:45 p.m. in our Meeting Room A.
Nrithyanjali School of Dance will be here for a program called Storytelling through Indian Classical Dance! The school, based in Bolingbrook, presents a visually stunning and traditional dance form originating from southern India called Bharatanatyam, which is nearly 2,500 years old. This storytelling comes to life using a language of unique hand gestures and distinctive movements, extravagant costumes and rhythmic patterns enhanced by ankle bells and intricate footwork. Dancers depict stories from Hindu Mythology and introduce Indian dance, Hindu culture and spirituality to all. Join us 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. in our Meeting Room A.
Map Your Language will be from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in our Children’s Services Department. What language do you speak at home? Come to the library to fill out a slip and place it on our map of the world. Let’s see how many different languages our library patrons speak!
In honor of Día, make a special craft in the Creativity Park from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Our programs for the day are all Drop in. All ages are welcome; preschoolers must be with an adult. Seating will be first come, first served for a maximum of 90 audience members.
